The Georgetown Lions Club is pleased to announce that Mrs. Dianne Penrice has been selected as Georgetown’s Citizen of the Year for 2010. Given out annually since 1972, this award recognizes the contributions volunteers make to the community.Dianne has lived in Georgetown for over 50 years where she attended elementary and high school. Married to Doug for over 40 years, Dianne raised her family and worked in the community. Dianne has worked as a Realtor for the past 24 years, helping her clients buy and sell their homes. Dianne has been an avid volunteer, giving freely of her time and talents to many community organizations. As a young girl Dianne joined Brownies then moved up to Girl Guides, followed by Rangers. As an adult she continued with the Girl Guide organization as Brownie and Guide leader. As a young mother with two children and a full time job Dianne decided she wanted to get more involved in her community and joined The Jaycettes. Here she volunteered on many community projects such as The Crazy Boat Race where she was a committee member for a number of years working up to be the Jaycettes Co-Chair with the Jaycee Co-Chair, Meet the Candidates Night, Baseball Tournaments and Winterfest, along with many other smaller projects like Christmas Chocolates, Car Washes etc (to raise funds for community projects). The Baby Seat Rental Program was the one of the larger Jaycettes program Dianne was involved in. This program provided infant car seats to new mothers for the first six months of their baby’s life. Dianne served as President for two terms. Dianne has been a member of the Brampton Real Estate Board since becoming a Real Estate sales representative. This is a non-profit organization that relies on volunteers to serve on the Board of Directors and various committees. Dianne served four years as Director and one year as Vice President as well as volunteering on the Education Committee, Bylaws, Professional Standards, Membership and the Social Committee. Dianne volunteered for five years on the Arts Alive committee for the Halton Hills Library Cultural Centre. Here she volunteered to help organize events that would raise funds for the complex. The Halton Hills Cultural Roundtable was formed 3 years ago to promote Arts Culture & Heritage in the community and has just recently taken over the role of the Arts Alive Committee. Dianne is an active member of the Roundtable and is currently serving on the steering committee. Most recently volunteering in the organization of the Big Daddy Festival held last June and the yearly Symposium which is held in January. In 1998 Dianne served on the local Board of Directors for the Canadian Cancer Society and became President of the Georgetown office a short time later. During her Presidency The Canadian Cancer Society announced it would be closing the Georgetown office and moving it to Milton. Like many others, Dianne was shocked. The Halton Hills community would no longer have local support for those touched with cancer. Dianne and her team realized the impact of the closing on our community office and were instrumental in the forming of Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills (CASHH). Dianne assumed the role of President and with a dedicated Board of Directors and support from the community established a new office for CASHH. Dianne volunteered hundreds of hours during the initial stages to get the organization up and running while maintaining the services offered to those suffering from cancer. One of the most memorable social events in the Georgetown community was the 2007 Homecoming. Thousands of past and current residents were treated to a weekend to remember; featuring a wine and cheese reception, dinner, dance, memorial service, golf tournament and open house at Georgetown District High School. Dianne volunteered her time and energy once again, working on the fundraising committee as well as volunteering her time at the actual events. In early 2008 Dianne was asked to participate in a new project, which would light up the Dominion Garden Park with Christmas lights. This project ultimately became known as Light Up The Hills. Dianne once again jumped into action and volunteered in what she calls “a really fun project”. Dianne assisted in getting Light Up The Hills incorporated and establishing bylaws as well as volunteering in the various fundraising events and gaining corporate sponsorships. Over the years Dianne has been an active community canvasser for Heart and Stroke, Canadian Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation and many others. Dianne loves to get involved in various organizations throughout our community and has always felt the desire to give back. When asked what the highlight of her volunteering was she said “seeing that Tree of Hope lit up for the first time in the Dominion Garden Park”. The Citizen of the Year Committee recognizes the tremendous value that Dianne’s volunteering has brought to all citizens of Georgetown and, as such, have selected Dianne as the Georgetown Lions Club 2010 Citizen of the Year. The awards dinner will be held March 29, 2011 at the Lions Hall. Tickets are $35.00 each and are available from The Carpet Barn or by calling Lion Linda Dilks at 905-702-1284.
