georgetown_400_276HALTON HILLS – The Town of Halton Hills will once again join other communities in Canada and around the world in participating in Earth HourTM by turning off any unnecessary lights, reducing energy consumption and addressing climate change. The objective of Earth Hour is to have as many individuals, businesses, organizations and governments participating as possible. Earth Hour registration is available at: www.EarthHourCanada.org.

Earth Hour 2011 will be celebrated on Saturday, March 26, 2011 between 8:30pm and 9:30pm. Its objective is to increase public awareness of the need to decrease energy use and to take action against climate change. Earth Hour participation is voluntary, fun and informative.

In 2010, Earth Hour became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 countries and territories throughout the world participated. Canadians participated in large numbers, with about 10 million Canadians from over 150 cities/municipalities taking part. The goal for Earth Hour 2011 is to go beyond the hour. Hence, when the lights are turned back on, think about what else you can do to make a difference.

In 2010, Halton Hills achieved an energy savings of about 7%. This reduction translates into a savings of 4,060 kWh of electricity or enough to power approximately 3,300 homes for one hour! Since first participating in Earth Hour in 2008, the community has saved enough electricity to power almost 15,000 homes for an hour. These energy savings demonstrate the community’s commitment to protecting the environment, and show that it is possible to take meaningful action against climate change.

Speaking about Earth Hour, Mayor Bonnette said:
“Since 2008, our community has collaborated to make Earth Hour a success. In 2011, we hope to do the same by demonstrating that it is possible to take meaningful local action against climate change. To achieve our goal, I once again encourage the participation of our residents, businesses and community organizations. Participation in Earth Hour will help implement the Town’s Green Plan and continue to move all of us towards sustainability. It is urgent that we all act now.”

This year, in support of Earth Hour, the Town will:

- Turn off all non-essential lights at all Town facilities during Earth Hour, without jeopardizing public safety and security, and interrupting regular service.
- Host a free and fun ‘Star Gazing Event’ in the auditorium of Christ the King Secondary School located at 161 Guelph Street (Georgetown) on Saturday March 26th, starting at 7:00pm. This will include an indoor presentation from Cosmic Connections on the solar system, followed by an outdoor telescope viewing session using large telescopes (weather permitting). In case of cloudy skies, a presentation will be offered indoors simulating the night sky. Space is limited. Please register by contacting the Office of Sustainability at 905.873.2601 ext. 2290 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
- Engage the business community to participate by promoting Earth Hour to their employees and customers and by offering special Earth Hour menu items at restaurants.
- Encouraging Earth Hour registration by drawing for an ‘Earth Hour Gift Basket(s)’. These gift basket(s) may include such things as a programmable thermostat, energy meter, CFL bulbs and other energy conservation items.

Earth Hour is a symbolic event and it alone will not reverse climate change. Nonetheless, Earth Hour is a high profile opportunity to demonstrate that people working together can make a difference on climate change.
