Fire Prevention Week is being celebrated throughout North America October 3 - 9, 2010 and the theme this year is “Smoke alarms: A sound you can live with”.Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic fire that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, and destroyed more than 17,400 structures and more than 2000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of it’s’ damage October 9, 1871. While the Great Chicago Fire was the best-known blaze to start during this period, another distinctive fire known as the Peshtigo Fire took place, resulting in the most devastating forest fire in America. These two fires have resulted in a partnership of many, many agencies joining together to combat the senseless tragedies and losses resulting from fires. Eight decades of fire prevention and public education have taken place since the Great Chicago and Peshtigo Fires. The biggest result to come our efforts is the mandatory smoke alarm law. A recent amendment by the Province of Ontario and the Fire Marshal of Ontario now requires a working smoke alarm on every level of the home. As of March 1, 2006 this amendment applies to single family, semi-detached and town homes, whether owner-occupied or rented. Mayor Rick Bonnette says, “The citizens of Halton Hills should be aware that only working smoke alarms can save lives”. While it is law that every home shall be equipped with working smoke alarms, from time to time the Fire Department still discovers a home without a working smoke alarm. Mayor Bonnette adds, “For the minimal cost of a $10.00 smoke alarm, the life of a family member could be saved in the event of a fire”. As a kick-off to Fire Prevention Week, we are hosting an Open House at our new 53 Maple Avenue Station on Sunday October 3, 2010 from 1:00 – 4:00. In addition to the Sunday Open House, both Maple Avenue and the Headquarters Station will be open to the public from October 4 to 7 from 5:00 until 8:00 for viewing of equipment, apparatus and meeting with Fire personnel. Everybody is welcome.
