The season is arriving quickly. With the coming of longer, warmer sunny days also comes the arrival of the barbecue season. But before grilling up a few burgers and dogs, do yourself a favor and spend some time tuning up the appliance. Deputy Chief Harry Olivieri offers the following tips and checks: 1. Check the propane or gas supply hoses for any cracks, wear, tears and abrasions before turning the gas supply on. 2. Once the supply is turned on, check all the hose connections using a brush and 50/50 soap/water solution. If any bubbles appear, turn off the gas and retighten the connections. 3. Never use an open-flame to check for leaks. 4. Using a pipe cleaner or small piece of wire, clean all the burner gas ports of cobwebs, rust and insects. 5. If there is any doubt about the condition of any parts on the barbecue, replace them. 6. When you’re ready to light the burner, keep the lid wide open. Never try lighting with the lid closed. 7. If the barbecue fails to light, turn off the burner control and wait for a minute or two before trying to relight. 8. When taking the food off the grill, shut the gas supply off first and allow the gas in the line to burn off. 9. Watch and keep children away from the hot barbecue. Burns are very serious and painful. 10. Never grill in enclosed areas or indoors. Deputy Chief Olivieri says, “Spending half an hour or so performing these simple checks will allow you to have a more enjoyable summer when standing at the grill.” For additional safety tips about barbecue safety, visit the Departments’ Information Centre and speak with Staff at Georgetown Markeplace. Hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 to 2:00.
