Lice happen to everyone who has a child and is nothing to be ashamed of. Your child cannot go to school unless they are cleared by the a nurse. Kelly will help with fight the little creatures, recommend the right products, give a hand with the tedious work of picking the nits from hair, all in the privacy of your home or at her clinic. Andrea Dubravsky: How do you know if a child has lice? Kelly: I look for the eggs and any live lice. The eggs look like very small sesame seeds that are stuck to the hair shaft. They are likely to appear behind the ears, the nap of the neck and the top of the head. Andrea Dubravsky: What is the first thing that should be done when we discover lice? Kelly: Well, call me and I can take of it for you. Most people go out and buy a shampoo. Picking the right product is a challenge. This can be daunting because there are many expensive products but you get only one treatment out of them. Even picking the right comb is not easy. The small plastic combs are not that good. I can work fast enough to make sure the kids get back to school ASAP and that parents don’t have to take time off from work. The cheapest way for people is to call me first because I get the products at a discounted price. You have to add the money for the products and for hydro you will use to do all the washing and cleaning. And there is no way around that. Not to mention the time it would take you to pick up all the lice from the hair. Just to compare, if it takes you 4 hours to pick the nits from short hair. Well, it’s likely going to take me 1-2 hours. Yesterday I did hair up to waist long, in ringlets and it took me 3 hours. Andrea Dubravsky: Do you go to people’s houses? Kelly: I operate out of my clinic or I do the house calls. I find that people prefer if I come to their house. Especially moms who have small kids prefer to stay home. Then, there are other moms who prefer to come to my clinic while dad stays home and vacuums and cleans. Andrea Dubravsky: What products would you recommend to kill lice? Kelly: There are many products out there that work. The choice of products is very individual and I like to talk to people first. There are home remedies too but one has to be careful their kids are not allergic to them. I prefer to stick to the products that work. Andrea Dubravsky: How many treatments are required to get rid of lice? Kelly: Two treatments are usually required. I do one treatment and then come back to check on your child. If there is any more I repeat the treatment at no charge, of course. I work till the job is done. After the treatment I use a leave on spray that works as a repellent. Andrea Dubravsky: Can lice spread to other family members and how can we prevent that? Kelly: Yes they can. We can prevent it by stopping any head contact, wearing bandannas or shower caps, vacuuming the car seats, couches. Washing the bedsheets, towels. Getting treatments done as soon as the lice is spotted. Washing the helmets. At school, kids should make sure that their coat does not end up on other people’s hooks or lockers. It would be best if the kids put their coats on their chairs while there is an outbreak at school. It’s good to check your kids as soon as they get home from school. Andrea Dubravsky: Are kids likely to get lice than adults? Kelly: Lice affect all ages but kids are likely to get them because they are in groups and there is more physical contact. It’s not like we hug our co-workers.
