Earth Hour 2012 in Halton Hills PDF Print E-mail

georgetown_400_285The Town of Halton Hills Sustainability department is encouraging residents to participate by (among other) reading with a flashlight (batteries isn't energy?) and organizing community discussions on environmental issues.

That just proves how little thought has been put into suggestions. Does anyone seriously think that people will organized community discussions on environmental issues?

With relatively small population we are number seven in the world's energy consumption. Based on Center for Energy, Canada produces 19.3 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) per year, and consumes 14 quadrillion Btu per year. This amount of energy would take to heat 18 million Canadian homes for 10 years. 56.2 per cent of the energy is derived from oil and petroleum which are non-renewable and pretty expensive these days. 43.8 per cent is derived from hydro power, wind, solar energy, biomass and bio fuels.

Residential consumption however contributes to one 17 per cent. Transportation accounts for 31 per cent as well as industrial sector. Do you really think that dimming lights for one hour is going to make a difference?

If we really want to change something we have to invest in renewable energy sources, not make a pose and take senseless pledge that will be forgotten in a week. But, that means industries and transportation who are now paying taxes for oil and petroleum may become self sufficcient which does not really fit the plans, does it?

As long as we derive most of our energy from oil and send CO2 emissions, Earth Hour is not going to save the world

And don't get me started on this official Earth Hour commercial....

I suppose the writer is also against Christmas--Bah humbug. A "feel good event" gives one pause to think about the challenges...regardless of the fact no one is willing to give up cars or summer air conditioning. Deal with it and celebrate hope and opportunity...it all leads to innovation and change.

Events like earth hour are there to make people feel good and create an illusion that they are doing something constructive to help the environment. In my opinion it is all a sham organized by over educated liberal minded do gooders that are out of touch with reality.
A prime example of the mess that can be created is Ontario's Green Energy program. It is driving the province into bankruptcy and has created a larger per person debt load than exists in Greece. For those that feel warm and fuzzy reading by flashlight for an hour - stay happy in your little bubbles of existence, while the rest of us watch life as we knew it in Ontario crumble.
