Green Tips

georgetown_400_335Two new Georgetown fire halls, both Acton and Georgetown library are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified  green buildings. What does it mean?

LEED rated buildings  are based on six categories:
- sustainable site development,
- water efficiency
- energy efficiency and the atmosphere
- materials selection
- indoor environmental quality
- innovation in design

Buildings can be rated silver, gold or platinum.

Effects of green architecture

When constructing a building the land it is being built on is impacted. In green architecture the idea is to impact the surrounding land as minimally as possible even improve the lands. North Green Living made it priority that only the necessary trees will be cut down when constructing the houses.

Use of local resources and waste management

Using local materials and labour is important in green design as well as using recyclable materials, low-flow toilets, low-emitting paints and using solar power sources. Proper recycling and waste management are mandatory for a green building.
One should always considering the position of the house to receive maximum sunlight to heat and illuminate is another prerequisite for green architectural design.

To design a green building does not only require sense of awareness for an environment but also consideration of the environment without sacrificing human comfort altogether.
