Skating arenas, libraries and stupidity PDF Print E-mail

skatingIn case you are not following what is going on in Halton Hills, two major funding decisions are to be made. One - funding for new skating arenas in Georgetown and Acton, two - funding for addition and new equipment such as CT scanner for the Georgetown Hospital.

Both projects carry a hefty price tag. Skating arenas $29 million, Georgetown hospital $4.5 million.

Thursday's Letters to Editor in the Independent were extra long as a lot of people took time to voice their opinion. Although, I am not sure if that would happen if it wasn't for Ted Brown who openly said that $29 million for skating arenas is against common sense as it would put the Town into unnecessary debt and mean tax increase for us - the residents. Another example of how a celebrity, even a small town one, can help things moving.

Being in a strong agreement with Ted Brown from the Independent, I took my time to read all the Letters to Editor this time and stumbled up on one he mentions in his column, about the guy who wrote that Ted obviously longed for the days when Georgetown was a farming community and he could drive his tractor everywhere.

However, what caught my attention was the sentence "Arenas as opposed to libraries are revenue generators" and continues saying "libraries are a dying institution".

It scares me that an adult person does not see the importance of libraries and therefore education. This is an opinion of someone who does not think things through and does not see that it is the educated people who run the society for, well, let's be honest, not so smart ones. And, they usually do bring revenue, even for the arenas.

Anyway, back to the story. Most of the Letters to Editor expressed an opinion, that arenas are not something only a part of our community benefits from. Especially seniors are concerned that their taxes will increase to pay for something they do not use. Going into debt in order to buy something we simply want has become the trademark of this society, as we have witnessed lead us to a major recession, cost families to loose their jobs, houses and people battling depression.

I suggest, we grow up and get used to the fact, that we can't whine to get something just because we want it. And asking all of us to pay for it is an audacity.

We have to start prioritize projects that are necessary to complete. Addition to the Georgetown Hospital and CT scan are a necessity for our growing community. However, there are more parties that have to pick up the final bill.
